from a feature:
by journalist Andreas Radlmaier (2000):
I am a jazz musician but to go through history in 12 bars – that can't be all." Looking at the musical environment sceptically is part of the attitude of pianist and composer Klaus Treuheit. He was never satisfied with "just a little section of musical expression. Dealing with jazz in our times should not be nostalgia only; I am more interested in openness." Consequently, Klaus moved from the free interaction of jazz energies to New Music in the 90s. He has contributed three soundtracks to films by Aki Kaurismäki as well as music for the stage.
In the 80s he and his trio NARDIS were still digging for the roots of the 50s. Then he went on to extend the musical world of Cecil Taylor, of the undervalued drummers Pete LaRoca & Donald Bailey and of Morton Feldman - among others - and changed into a highly individualistic experimentor – in solo performances, with his trios, in duos with different partners like bass-clarinet player Rudi Mahall, the free jazz giant Peter Kowald, the drummer Walter Bittner or a string trio - to mention a few.
His major focus is always the art of the concentrated dialogue. An important Munich paper wrote: "His music is always exciting and goes way beyond the established modes of jazz." Another paper said: "His music is a real ear-opener!"
Do yourself a favour and listen.
